Flooding, landslide hit Mati City


DAVAO CITY – The Mati City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported several flooding incidents and landslides as heavy downpour continues to batter Davao Oriental on Thursday, Dec. 26.

These affected Barangays Bobon, Macambol, Mamali, and Tamisan.

The Mati-DRRMO confirmed a landslide on Zigzag Road in Barangay Badas, a vital transportation link connecting the city to nearby municipalities.

According to the Mati City Information Office, the City Engineer's Office and the motorpool team were promptly informed to mobilize resources and resolve the problem. Rescue teams remain on alert, with clearing operations set to prioritize residents' safety and reopen the road.

The local government advised the residents, particularly in the impacted areas, to stay vigilant and adhere to the local authorities' safety advisories.

The city government of Mati led by Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat assured the public that all necessary resources are being utilized to respond to the emergencies and support affected families.

Eight-hundred seventy-seven families have been affected by flooding and landslide in Davao region due to heavy rain spawned by the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

Data obtained from the Office of the Civil Defense-11 said out of the 877 families or over 3,000 individuals, 215 families or 953 persons were displaced from three barangays in Malita town, Davao Occidental province and San Isidro in Davao Oriental province as of 6 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27.

OCD-11 Information Officer Karlo Alexis Puerto said the internally displaced families are currently taking shelter in four evacuation areas. He added that the flooding subsided as of 6 a.m. Friday.

The OCD said in a statement that a shear line, an ITCZ, and low-pressure areas have been causing floods in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Eastern Visayas, and Davao region since Dec. 8.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical, Astronomical, and Services Administration announced several areas in the country are expected to experience rains on Friday due to the northeast monsoon (amihan) and ITCZ.
