The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday, Dec. 11, reported a "decline" in cases of Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI) nationwide and urged the public to continue practicing good hygiene to prevent the spread of illnesses.
In a statement, the DOH said a total of 7,571 cases were logged from Nov. 3 to 16, which is lower compared to the 7,971 cases recorded from Oct. 20 to Nov. 2.
The DOH noted that "further decreases" in cases have been reported, with 3,710 cases recorded from Nov. 17 to 30.
Preventive measures
Despite the decline in ILIs, the DOH cautioned against interpreting the most recent numbers, as case counts may still "fluctuate" due to delayed consultations and reporting.
"Nevertheless, preventive measures such as frequently washing hands and wearing face masks when experiencing symptoms like cough or colds will help sustain this trend," the DOH said.
DOH Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa also underscored the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices, as this is "essential in limiting the spread of communicable diseases like ILI."
"With the Amihan season in full swing and the holidays fast approaching, we strongly encourage the proper use of face masks, observing cough etiquette, and staying at home when experiencing symptoms," Herbosa said. "Consult your nearest primary care physician, and inquire about flu vaccination for yourselves and your families," he added.
ILI cases
As of Nov. 30, the DOH has recorded a total of 165,992 ILI cases, which is 17 percent lower than the 200,525 cases reported during the same period last year.
The DOH commended the "collaborative efforts" of its regional offices, local government units, and health partners in helping keep ILI cases manageable nationwide.
Meanwhile, the DOH noted that despite the overall nationwide decline in ILI cases, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Bicol Region, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have reported an increase in ILI cases from Nov. 3 to 30, with up to 1,445 new cases recorded during this period.
