Japanese 'fraudster, thief' arrested in Taguig City

A Japanese national, who is wanted in his country for alleged fraud and theft involving over seven million yen (about P2.6 million), has been arrested in Taguig City while applying for a visa extension, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The BI identified the Japanese as Kudo Tomoya, 31, who was intercepted last Nov. 15 at the bureau’s extension office at the SM Aura mall in Taguig City.

The bureau said Kudo went to the BI extension office to renew his visa after having arrived in the Philippines last Oct. 15.

However, the bureau said “it was found that Kudo is the subject of a BI watchlist, after being charged as an undesirable alien.”

It said it received last Nov. 8 an official communication from Japanese authorities which stated that an arrest warrant has been issued against Kudo.

“The warrant was reportedly issued by the Tokyo Summary Court in August for charges of breaking into a structure, theft and fraud, in violation of the Japanese Penal Code,” it also said.

“In 2022, Kudo was said to have broken into his former office and stole a bankbook and another office item valued at JPY2,000.  Later that day, he reportedly posed as an employee of his former office and swindled a bank employee of JPY7,876,000 using the said bankbook,” it added.

The Japanese national is currently detained in the BI’s detention facility in Taguig City pending his deportation.
