Manila Buletin (MB) Executive Vice President and Publisher Herminio "Sonny" Coloma Jr. underscored the importance of collaboration and creativity in the fight against fake news and misinformation during a covenant signing Monday, Nov. 11 between stakeholders of the 2025 mid-term polls and the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
"Mahalaga na ang eleksyon ay may integridad, ito ay ganapin sa isang tapat...na paraan (It's important for the elections to have integrity, for it to be carried out in an honest manner)," Coloma said on the sidelines of the event, which was organized by GMA Network Inc.
MB, the country's leading daily, was one of the over 50 signatories of the memorandum of agreement [MOA) to jump-start the preparations for the most comprehensive and credible coverage of the 2025 elections.
Coloma, a former Palace communications chief, recognized the threat posed by fake news as well as the dubious use of artificial intelligence (AI) to the upcoming elections.
"Kailangang magkaisa ang pinakamalawak na hanay ng mga mamamahayag, ng mga organisasyon sapagkat malaking suliranin nito," he said, alluding to the organizations that took part in the ceremonial signing.
(The largest gathering of journalists and organizations must band together since this is a formidable problem.)
"Yung teknolohiya ay napaka-makapangyarihan. Mayroon tayong tinatawag ngayon na artifical intelligence na tinatapatan o nilalagpasan pa ang human intelligence," noted Coloma.
(Technology is very powerful. We have what we call artificial intelligence that can match or even surpass human intelligence.)
"Kaya hindi uubra na yung dating mga paraan, dating mga kaisipan ang paiiralin. Kailangan, mas mapanglikha rin tayo para makapagtatag ng matibay na depensa laban sa mga pwersa ng kasamaan," he further said.

(That's why old-fashion solutions and idea won't work. We need to be creative in order to put up a strong defense against these forces of evil.)
Media organizations, election watchdogs, the academe, and digital platforms comprised the 50 signatories of the MOA.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia was also among the attendees.
Monday's covenant-signing was a follow up to the Panata Kontra Fake News (Pledge Against Fake News) that was also organized by GMA Network Inc. last August.
"As a coalition for the most trusted organizations in our respective fields, we come together once again to deliver an election coverage that is not only the most comprehensive, but also conforms to the highest standards of honesty and integrity in a manner beyond reproach," said GMA Network Inc. President and CEO Gilberto Duavit Jr. in his speech.
"Sa patuloy nating pagkakaisa, lalo nating maipagtitibay ang demokrasya sa ating bansa (We can strengthen democracy in the country through our unity)," Duavit added.
