Energy conservation tips for safe, efficient travel this 'Undas'
As All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day approach, Filipinos are urged to be energy-conscious ahead of their weekend travels to hometowns.
The Department of Energy (DOE) has called on the public to consider their energy consumption and travel plans, noting the importance of sustainability during the Undas season.
“We recognize the importance of honoring our departed loved ones this All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. In line with this, we aim to ensure that everyone can travel safely and efficiently… By making smart energy choices on the road and at home, we can support the country’s energy efficiency and conservation goals while ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for all,” Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said.
Travelers are advised to plan ahead by checking road conditions, traffic updates, and other alternative routes to minimize travel time and reduce fuel consumption. They are also reminded to have regular vehicle maintenance to ensure safety and fuel efficiency, as well as have a functioning emergency kit.
The DOE also reminded responsible and safe driving by following speed limits, and maintaining a steady speed to improve fuel efficiency. Traveling during off-peak hours may also help conserve energy and avoid traffic congestions.
Subsequently, travelers may consider carpooling or using public transportation options to reduce the number of vehicles on the road that could help minimize heavy traffic and fuel waste.
Since the aftermath of Severe Tropical Storm “Kristine”, the public has been advised against traveling to the Bicol region because of ongoing traffic issues caused by impassable roads.
On the other hand, energy conservation should also be practiced at home. Fuentebella reminded Filipinos to check all electrical outlets and cords are unplugged to avoid any energy waste or safety hazards. Inspecting any signs of damage on electrical facilities are also important to reduce the risk of electrical issues in an unattended home.
“Taking these simple precautions not only conserves energy but also promotes safety and peace of mind, especially when no one will be left at home,” he said.
“Our actions today have a lasting impact on our families, communities, and the generations that follow… This holiday, as we honor the memory of our loved ones, let us also embrace the responsibility of wise energy use. Together, we can make this season one of both meaningful remembrance and sustainable practices that benefit our country.”
