39 Leyte Regional Prison guards deputized as environment officers
Corrections officers of the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) in Abuyog, Leyte have been tasked not only to secure prisoners but also to protect the environment.
In a statement, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said that 39 LRP corrections officers have been deputized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
It said the deputation is in line with the directive of BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. “to protect and conserve the bureau’s natural resources, leading to a more sustainable BuCor.”
The Deputized Environment and Natural Resources Officers (DENRO) took their oaths last Oct. 9 after DENR Region VIII Regional Director Lormelyn E. Claudio issued the deputation order.
“The newly deputized officers received their DENRO identification cards which marked the beginning of their duty in the protection, conservation, management and proper use of environment and natural resources,” BuCor said.
“Additionally, this deputation has given the prison a better capability and expertise in protecting its very own natural resources considering the vast land this prison has and securing it from possible illegal logging activities,” it added.
