BI to probe officer involved in road rage violence vs taxi driver
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Sunday, Jan. 7, assured that it will investigate its immigration officer who was caught on video hurting a taxi driver during a traffic altercation in Taguig City.
“Violence is never the answer,” BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco reminded the bureau’s officials and personnel in a statement.
Tansingco issued the statement in response to a road rage incident involving a BI officer who punched and kicked taxi driver Celso Delos Santos last Friday afternoon, Jan. 5. The incident was caught on video that went viral.
“The incident occurred when the employee was off duty, and his actions are not in any way related to his functions as an immigration officer,” Tansingco said.
“We will, however, be looking into the incident to see if there are any policies of the civil service on the conduct of government employees that might have been violated,” he assured.
He said the incident "serves as a reminder to government employees to practice maximum tolerance, both in and out of the workplace.”
“As government employees, there is a higher standard that we are expected to follow, even outside of our workplace,” he stressed.
“Actions of government employees reflect not on the individual, but on the entire agency,” he pointed out.
