DOH raises code white alert ahead of Traslacion 2024

In preparation for the annual Traslacion or Feast of the Black Nazarene on Jan. 9, the Department of Health (DOH) raised "code white alert" on Thursday, Jan. 4 for all DOH hospitals in Metro Manila, which will be in effect on Jan. 5 to 11.

When code white is activated during national events, holidays, or celebrations with the potential for mass casualties, it allows designated medical personnel and staff to be on standby for the immediate acceptance and treatment of incoming patients at hospitals.

“Our priority is the health and safety of all Filipinos during this significant gathering for the annual feast of the Black Nazarene. The activation of Code White Alert underscores our commitment to ensure prompt and efficient medical assistance in case of any medical emergency on the ground,” DOH Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said.

Deployment of emergency response teams

The DOH said that as part of the preparedness strategy, eight health emergency response teams equipped with ambulances will be strategically deployed along the Traslacion route to provide advanced emergency medical services to the thousands of devotees expected to attend the event.

These teams will be stationed at key locations, such as Quirino Grandstand, Roxas Boulevard corner Ayala (National Museum and Fine Arts), Ayala Boulevard corner Taft (Philippine Normal University), Ayala Boulevard corner San Marcelino, San Sebastian Church with Reachout, Villarica, Quezon Boulevard, Quinta Market, and Paterno, Quezon Boulevard.

The strategic deployment aims to provide prompt and efficient emergency medical assistance, covering significant segments and quadrants to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants throughout the event, the DOH said.

Precautions, safety measures

The DOH advised the public to take the necessary precautions and safety measures during the Feast of the Black Nazarene, such as wearing face masks, ensuring good airflow, and considering remote participation to avoid crowds and associated health risks.

It also asked devotees not to touch and kiss figures or statues, to stay hydrated, and to avoid prolonged exposure to heat to avoid heatstroke.

The DOH also emphasized the public’s collective responsibility to ensure a safe environment during this culturally significant event.
