United Nations Special Rapporteur Irene Khan is set to meet with officials of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to discuss her trip to the Philippines.
Justice Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez said on PTV’s Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon that the DOJ has prepared for the visit of Khan who is the special rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression.
“Inaasahang makikipagpulong si Khan sa DOJ upang talakayin ang mga hakbang ng pamahalaan na nagpapatibay sa justice system, freedom of expression at rule of law sa bansa. (Khan is expected to hold a dialogue with the DOJ to discuss steps that the government takes to strengthen the justice system, freedom of expression and rule of law in the country),” Gutierrez said.
“Naghanda ang DOJ ng isang welcome dinner para kay Khan mamayang gabi upang pormal na umpisahan ang kaniyang pagbisita sa Pilipinas na tatagal hanggang Feb. 2 (The DOJ prepared a welcome dinner for Khan tonight to formally start her visit in the country which will end on Feb.2),” she said.
She noted that Khan is the third UN rapporteur who visited the country under the administration of President Marcos.
The other two are Special Rapporteur on The Sale and Sexual Exploitation of Children Mama Fatima Singhateh and Special Rapporteur for Climate Change and Human Rights Dr. Ian Fry.
