DOST emphasizes importance of time: 'Once it's gone, we can never get it back'

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region I, in a statement on Monday, Jan. 22, expressed their support for raising public awareness about the Philippine Standard Time (PhST) and reminded everyone about the importance of valuing and utilizing each other's time wisely.

"Time is important because it is the one thing we can never get back. Once it's gone, it's gone, and we can never get it back. This powerful message emphasizes the deep importance of time in our lives," said DOST-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Astronomical Publication and Planetarium Unit Chief Mario M. Raymundo.

Raymundo emphasized the message during a Facebook Live last Jan. 11, as part of the 2024 National Time Consciousness Week, themed "G na G, Oras Pinas para sa Bagong Pilipinas," as mandated by Republic Act 10535 —- which aims to promote public awareness of the importance of time.

The PAGASA is the "designated official timekeeper in the country," he said, as they use advanced equipment, such as the Hewlett-Packard 5071 A (Cesium Clock) and Microsemi S600 (Rubidium Clock), to ensure that the Philippines has accurate timekeeping.

Meanwhile, DOST-Science & Technology Information Institute (STII) Information Officer III Allan Mauro V. Marfal stressed that time consciousness should not be practiced in a "single week," as it should be a "continuous awareness" throughout the year.

Furthermore, Marfal encouraged youth involvement in promoting the significance and value of time to be active and productive across various platforms, especially in social media.

The initiative, he added, seeks to instill a "sense of responsibility" and "efficiency" in the younger generation to ensure that they recognize the value of time in shaping a progressive and dynamic society.
