14 die in Davao landslides, OCD-Davao reports

DAVAO CITY – The Office of Civil Defense-Davao region (OCD-Davao) reported on Sunday, January 21, 14 deaths following the landslides triggered by recent heavy rainfall from the shear line that impacted several areas.

In a progress report obtained from the OCD-Davao, 11 died in Barangay Mount Diwata in Monkayo town, one killed in Maragusan town, both in Davao de Oro, and two perished in Davao City due to landslides.

OCD-Davao operations officer Franz Irag said three people in Mount Diwata in Monkayo were injured by a landslide and one in Pantukan town and another man was hurt in a flood in Maragusan. He added that all the injured were already taken care of.

Irag said that 111,984 families or 490,458 individuals from Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and Davao City were affected by the flooding last week in the region.

The number of barangays and affected families is expected to increase since all affected local government units (LGUs) are still conducting Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDNA)  from the heavy rain and flooding on January 18.

Irag said responders in Davao de Oro are continuing search and rescue efforts. He added that although the region's weather has improved and the flash floods have subsided, everyone should stay alert.
