45,000 families displaced by Davao flood, landslide


DAVAO CITY – The Office of the Civil Defense-Davao region (OCD-Davao) reported that 45,000 families or 187,108 individuals  in 95 barangays across the region were displaced by landslide and flash flood caused by the shear line weather system on Thursday, January 18.

OCD-Davao operations officer Franz Irag said in an update on Friday, January 19, that aside from deaths and injuries recorded due to the landslide in Davao de Oro, one person was injured in Barangay New Albay, Maragusan, Davao de Oro following a flash flood.

The OCD-Davao said 61,035 families or 255,062 individuals were affected in Davao del Norte, 10,330 families (44,025 individuals) in Davao de Oro, 10,629 families (44,755 individuals) in Davao Oriental, and 1,164 families (5,341 individuals) in Davao Occidental.

Irag said 64 areas were flooded in Davao del Norte, 22 in Davao Oriental, and nine in Davao de Oro, with 52 barangays in New Bataan, Nabunturan, Maco, and Monkayo, Davao de Oro  affected by landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

Eleven roads, nine in Davao de Oro and two in Davao del Norte, are impassable to all vehicles due to landslide. Two bridges are also impassable in New Bataan due to scouring of a bridge line and overflowing of water in Caraga, Davao Oriental.

The OCD-Davao reported that 34 municipalities in the region, including Davao City, suspended classes on Friday, January 19, while work was cancelled in 24 towns to safety and give way to those affected.

Barangay Cambanogoy in Asuncion, Davao del Norte declared a state of calamity due to the severe effects of the shearline. The province evacuated 2,222 families (7,903 individuals).

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided 21,203 family food packs totaling P13,670,534 to  affected population in Caraga, Asuncion, Kapalong, San Isidro, and Tagum City in Davao del Norte.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported a missing 14-year-old boy, Cyrus Galabin, a resident of Barangay Tuganay in Carmen, Davao del Norte. According to the barangay, the boy went missing while swimming on the Tuganay River on January 17.
