Recto 'unquestionably' the ideal choice to lead DOF, senators say
Former senator and current House Deputy Speaker Ralph Recto is “unquestionably” the perfect choice as the new Department of Finance (DOF) secretary and a welcome addition to the Marcos administration’s economic team.
“As the Marcos administration works towards reviving our economy and regaining our status as one of Asia's fastest-growing economies, Ralph Recto is unquestionably the ideal choice to lead this endeavor,” former Senate President Franklin Drilon said in a statement.
He also said Recto’s extensive experience in crafting financial policies, as he exhibited as a senator and as the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) chief, will help steer the Philippine economy back onto the path of progress.
“Having served alongside him in the Senate for an impressive 12 years – three years as Senate President Pro-Tempore when I was Senate President – we have witnessed firsthand his profound understanding of the needs of the Filipino people,” Drilon further said.
“Congratulations on this well-deserved appointment!” the former senator also said.
Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda also welcomed Recto’s appointment saying she believes the agency would be in good hands “with Ralph at the helm.”
“Secretary Ralph Recto is both competent and hardworking. He is adept at economics and finance. We have seen him work. He also has good relations with people,” Legarda said.
“The DOF will be in good hands with Ralph at the helm. He will be able to lead and traverse our economic sustainability during challenging times. I am happy for him and for our country,” she added.
Legarda also said she is ready to support his confirmation at the Commission on Appointments (CA).
“I will not only support but also co sponsor his confirmation,” she said.
Sen. Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay also described Recto as the perfect choice as finance chief.
“Recto need not start at the bottom of the learning curve. He already has a good grasp of the different scenarios, and the realities being faced by our country in these challenging times,” Binay said.
“His expertise in finance and economics, and his experience in public administration are of great value to the Administration's economic team,” she added.
“Being our go-to and numbers-genius guy in the Senate when it comes to budget, taxation and finance, his exposure in laying out the government’s fiscal policy is a huge deal,” the senator stressed.
“We don’t only have an assertive and bold Batangueno at the helm of the DOF, but a seasoned lawmaker and economist who can steer our financial state to a progressive path,” Sen. Grace Poe said on her part.
“I am certain Sec. Recto will use his competence, compassion, hard work and brilliance to better the lives of the people,” Poe stressed.
Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva, for his part, said Recto will be a valuable addition to the Marcos administration "as he brings in his vast experience in the legislative and executive branches, as well as his knowledge and expertise on economic and fiscal policies."
"He was our tax whiz back when he was still in the Senate which is why his appointment is definitely good news for the country," Villanueva said.
Sen. Manuel "Lito" Lapid also echoed Villanueva's point of view, saying Recto is the best person to implement President Marcos' economic programs with determination and confidence.
"As a legislator, the contribution and legacy of Secretary Recto in promoting economic reforms to improve the lives of every Filipino could not be underestimated," Lapid said.
"He has been open-minded to listen and weigh different sides in complex matters," he added.
