  • Over 1.3 million students in around 4,000 schools nationwide are affected by extreme heat as schools suspend face-to-face classes and shift to alternative delivery modes.

More schools are currently implementing Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) amid the extreme heat experienced in various parts of the country, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

The latest data from DepEd, as of April 3, showed there are 3,954 schools affected by extreme heat, prompting their respective Local Government Units (LGUs) to suspend face-to-face classes.

In response, these schools have shifted to implementing ADM to ensure the learning continuity of 1,393,806 learners affected by the extreme weather conditions.

The ADM, as stipulated in DepEd Order No. 21, s. 2019, refers to “instructional or learning modalities that do not strictly follow the typical setup for regular classroom instruction but follow the K to 12 curriculum in content.”

Affected schools, learners

According to DepEd, several schools in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon (Calabarzon); MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan); Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos), and the National Capital Region (NCR) have suspended face-to-face classes and transitioned to ADM due to the hot weather.

Meanwhile, no suspensions of classes were reported in regions X, XI, XII, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Based on DepEd’s list, Region XII has the most number of schools that shifted to ADM with 801. It was followed by Region III with 199 and the NCR with 183.

Metro Manila, on the other hand, has the highest number of affected learners with 395,210, followed by Region VI with 331,911, and Region I with 283,091.

Aside from the suspension of classes, DepEd has allowed schools to implement several adjustments to ensure the safety of students and learners amid unfavorable weather conditions such as extreme heat.
