The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Friday, Sept. 29 said tropical cyclone wind signals may be raised due to the anticipated strong winds from tropical depression Jenny.

In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said wind warnings may be hoisted over extreme Northern Luzon on Sunday or Monday, Oct. 1 or 2.

“However, the hoisting may happen earlier should there be changes in the forecast scenario,” it added.

Jenny has intensified slightly, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 70 kph.

“It is forecast to steadily intensify throughout the forecast period and may become a tropical storm tomorrow afternoon or evening (Sept. 30). Furthermore, this tropical cyclone may reach typhoon category on late Monday or on Tuesday (Oct. 3),” it pointed out.

Landfall still not ruled out

PAGASA said Jenny was last spotted 1,240 kilometers east of Central Luzon, moving westward at 15 kph.

It may move west-northwestward on Saturday, then northwestward or north-northwestward on Sunday and Monday.

“A landfall or close approach scenario over Extreme Northern Luzon or northeastern mainland Cagayan is not ruled out since these scenarios are within the forecast confidence cone,” PAGASA said.

Rains due to Jenny, ‘habagat’

Due to the proximity of the track forecast to extreme Northern Luzon, PAGASA said heavy rainfall may affect Batanes and Babuyan Islands by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Likewise, the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” enhanced by Jenny may bring occasional rains over the western portions of Southern Luzon and Visayas on Sunday.

The potential enhancement of the southwest monsoon will bring gusty conditions over areas with no wind signal, particularly in the coastal and upland or mountainous areas exposed to winds.

Gusty conditions may prevail over Palawan, Romblon, most of Visayas, and Dinagat Islands on Sunday, and over most of Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Visayas, and Dinagat Islands on Monday.
