- The consultation forum, spearheaded by Senator Robinhood Padilla, was attended by entertainment industry leaders, workers, and other stakeholders.

More than stressing the number of working hours during filming, the government should ensure that TV and movie workers must have adequate work on their plate these days.
This was one of the salient points raised by director Joel Lamangan during an industry forum held Sept. 23 at Emar Building in Mandaluyong City.
The consultation forum, spearheaded by Senator Robinhood Padilla, was attended by entertainment industry leaders, workers, and other stakeholders.
It aimed to support the passing of the proposed Eddie Garcia Bill, which is meant to protect the rights of major and minor players in the TV and film industries.
At the consultation, representatives from AKTOR and various guilds comprising the Film Academy of the Philippines aired their grievances: low wages, very long working hours, and lack of insurance while working on set.
Against this background, Lamangan, former president of the Directors Guild of the Philippines Inc. (DGPI) and Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Pelikulang Pilipino (NMPP), said that government intervention is necessary so that producers can make more movies.
How to achieve this? “Government should stop collecting entertainment tax; one good way it can subsidize the industry,” he said.
Fewer investors want to produce movies because of the sudden drop in theater attendance. Ticket prices have become so expensive, ranging from P300 to P650 in Metro Manila.
The Eddie Garcia Bill has the full support of two other actors in the Senate, Jinggoy Ejercito and Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. On the lighter side, Joel Lamangan’s presence on FPJ’s Batang Quiapo has fanned great interest in the TV series, where he plays a colorful character named Rhoda.
Rhoda is as crazy as can be, a loudmouth, scene-stealing bitch whose life revolves around love for money only.
Joel celebrates the role with fire and brimstone. Before becoming a director, Joel was a full-time theater actor at PETA. Because he looked hefty and tough, he was almost always cast as a goon, a gangster, or a police officer. Rhoda turns around all that.
