P705-M committed to boost bike transport safety

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) signed a Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) of P705 million to cover safety measures in bike transportation.

The budget, given to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), would help implement the Active Transport Bike Share System and Safe Pathways Program in Metropolitan Areas.

Budget Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman said this issuance would provide sustainable and active mobility in the country’s overall transportation system.

“Achieving an improved transportation system toward a better quality of life for all Filipinos calls for a multisectoral approach,” Pangandaman said in a statement.

Pangandaman added that the DBM advocates for comfortable and safe spaces for bikers and other active transports on public roads.

Under Special Provision (SP) No. 8, the budget provided to the DOTr would be utilized to construct protected bike lanes, build accessible bike racks, improve end-of-trip cycling infrastructure, create safer pedestrian pathways and sidewalks, as well as make the pop-up bike lines permanent.

The program is also expected to help reduce carbon emissions in the metro, as well as improve public health and safety in the presence of upgraded bike and pedestrian facilities. 

This result would be deemed a sustainable transportation option that is cohesive, and comfortable for commuters and road-users.

One of the goals of the bike safety program is to decongest the metropolitan’s heavy road traffic, as motor vehicle users would find more efficient modes of transport. 

This also promotes indirect economic and environmental benefits, including saving money and time for travel, as well as an improvement in the cities’ air quality.

The budget chief also highlighted that this budget approval is in line with the President’s directive.

“President Bongbong Marcos was very particular when he directed us to provide the necessary budgetary support to the transport sector, as we see this as one aspect of the solution,” said Pangandaman. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
