Sec Remulla to meet with OSG to tackle legal strategy vs China on destruction of coral reefs in WPS
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said he will meet with the officials of the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) and other lawyers to discuss the strategy in the legal options that will be taken by the government against China on the destruction of coral reefs in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
“I am calling on the OSG next week together with our consultants of the Department of Justice so we can discuss the cases that may be filed in relation to the violations of environmental laws in the West Philippine Sea,” Remulla said during a press briefing late Friday afternoon, Sept. 22.
He disclosed that he is also eyeing the help of one of the foremost environmental law experts in Asia, lawyer Antonio Oposa Jr..
He said he has requested Oposa “to help us with the task of forming a complaint when it comes to this destruction of the environment.”
Remulla said the DOJ views the filing of the case as “a responsibility to the world to take a hand in matters wherein environmental destruction is being done.”
He pointed out that Philippines has “a moral responsibility to pursue the destruction of the environment as a task for the good of humanity.”
