'Hanna' keeps strength; enhanced 'habagat' to bring rains over Luzon, W. Visayas

Typhoon “Hanna” (international name: Haikui) maintained its strength while the enhanced southwest monsoon or "habagat" will continue to bring rains over parts of Luzon and the western portion of Visayas, the state weather bureau said on Saturday, Sept. 2.

"These two typhoons, Typhoon Saola (formerly known: 'Goring') and Typhoon Hanna (internationally known: 'Haikui'), continue to strengthen the southwest monsoon (also known as 'habagat')," weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said in Filipino.
The weather specialist added that the typhoon-enhanced "habagat" will bring rain to a large portion of Luzon and the western section of Visayas.
In its latest bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) spotted Typhoon Hanna 295 kilometers (km) northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.
It maintained its maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 170 kph while moving at 20 kph west northwestward.

Heavy rainfall forecast
Based on PAGASA’s forecast, Batanes will experience 50 to 100 millimeters (mm) of rainfall on Sept. 3.
"Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards," PAGASA said.
Meanwhile, Batanes remained under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1.

PAGASA said minimal to minor threat to life and property is expected in an area under Signal No. 1.
Potential impacts under this TCWS, PAGASA said, are poorly constructed houses, old dilapidated structures, and buildings made of lightweight materials that may experience minimal to minor damage.
