  • A total of 35 public schools in seven regions were chosen by DepEd for the pilot testing of the MATATAG Curriculum.

  • DepEd said that preparation for the pilot implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum will focus on 'how it is going to be implemented,' teacher training, and the learning resources to be used in the pilot schools.

Set to start in select schools next week, the Department of Education (DepEd) said the pilot implementation of the revised Kinder to Grade 10 (K to 10) curriculum or the MATATAG Curriculum will focus on training of teachers and preparing the resources before the phased implementation begins next year.

“The preparation for our pilot testing is really focused on our teachers because we need to train them on how to use our new curriculum guide, how to use our lesson exemplars, and also to develop learning activity sheets for the implementation of our curriculum,” Education Assistant Secretary and Deputy Spokesperson Francis Cesar Bringas said in a mix of English and Filipino during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

“Our preparation is more focused on how it is going to be implemented, including the learning resources that we are going to use for the pilot implementation,” Bringas explained.

The pilot run of the MATATAG Curriculum will start on Sept. 25 as announced by DepEd.

As part of the preparation for the pilot testing of the MATATAG Curriculum, Bringas explained that school heads, principals, supervisors, superintendents, and curriculum chiefs also underwent orientation.

“They are tasked with monitoring the implementation of the program and conducting technical assistance for the enhancement of expertise through collaborative activities among teachers,” he added.

Bringas noted that the pilot testing of the revised K to 10 curriculum will select schools in various regions starting school year (SY) 2023-2024.

“Our pilot testing this year covers only seven regions, with five schools per region. That adds up to a total of 35 pilot schools for Kinder, Grades 1, 4, and 7,” Bringas explained.

“This is going to be part of a research because here, we will examine the challenges, issues, and gaps that may be associated with the pilot implementation,” he added.

Bringas also noted that pilot testing also aims to iron out possible issues in the new K to 10 curriculum.

“Para pag nag-full implementation na tayo for the said grade levels, then magiging smooth na yung ating implementation kasi naka-phased or staged implementation lang tayo (This way, when we proceed to the full implementation for the said grade levels, our implementation will be smoother since we are following a phased or staged approach).” he added.

To ensure the smooth implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum, Bringas said that this will be rolled out in phases.

“By 2024-2025, we will implement Kinder, Grades 1, 4, and 7 then we have the succeeding grade levels for the second school year until we finish in 2028 until Grade 10 implementation,” he explained.

Based on the timeline released by DepEd, the MATATAG Curriculum will be implemented for Grades 2, 5, and 8 in SY 2025-2026.

In SY 2026-2027, the revised K to 10 curriculum will be rolled out in Grades 3, 6, and 9 and in SY 2027-2028, Grade 10 will be included in the implementation.

“By then, we will have complete revised curriculum offering from Kinder up to Grade 10,” Bringas said.

Launched in August, the MATATAG Curriculum was anchored on the MATATAG Agenda, the new battle cry of DepEd to address challenges in basic education under the leadership of Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte.

The MATATAG Curriculum, Duterte said during the launch, was designed to “help improve the learning outcomes” of our learners and “help them succeed in life.”

“We are optimistic that this will provide our children with a meaningful learning experience that will boost their intelligence, improve their knowledge, enhance their skills and talents, and prepare them to become well-rounded, mature individuals,” Duterte said.
