Dutch firm offers to help Bacolod address flooding

BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez here said on Tuesday, September 19, that a Dutch company has expressed interest in helping address flooding in this city.

Benitez, chairman of the Regional Development Council (RDC)-Western Visayas, along with some members of the city council, flew to Hong Kong last week to attend the 8th Belt and Road Summit, a premier international platform for promoting business collaboration and exploring concrete business opportunities.

He said that a team from Holland has expressed interest to come up with solutions as they have series of preventive systems that have been successful in The Netherlands.

“They will help. They will send a team and assess appropriate solution to flooding,” he added.

Benitez said that one of the matters they discussed was the conduct of the hydrology study.

“We might engage a local consultant for a hydrology study to come up with a proposal. It will not probably take that long,” he added.

Benitez said that aside from the garbage problem, high tide, which he believed is a result of climate change, is also a factor that contributes to flooding in this city.

“We have to address how to prevent the entry of high tide water in riverways and creeks,” the mayor said.

Benitez said that he has endorsed the matter to Councilor Vladimir Gonzales, who was also part of the Hong Kong delegation.

He believes that it is a permanent solution to address flooding in this city.

Last month, this city declared a state of calamity after half of the barangays were flooded due to typhoon “Goring” and the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”

Severe flooding affected 33 out of 61 barangays and displaced more than 9,000 residents.
