Over 700 athletes join Pasig City's summer sports clinic

More than 700 Pasigueño athletes joined the local government's annual summer sports clinic in Pasig City in July and August this year.

The summer sports clinic offered basic skills training in a variety of sports and a chance for young athletes to compete in culminating games, all while learning essential values like sportsmanship, discipline, and cooperation.

It also served as an activity for budding athletes to focus on honing their talents and exploring sports before they returned to school.

Majority of the athletes signed up for basketball, swimming, gymnastics, chess, taekwondo, table tennis, dancesport, and volleyball.

Other sports events in the workshop were karatedo, arnis, archery, softball, badminton, futsal or football, sepak takraw, lawn tennis, muay thai, and baseball.

The aforementioned sports were opened to children ages six to 14 years old.

Meanwhile, the parasports categories (such as badminton, chess, football, athletics [throwing and track], swimming, and table tennis), which were open to Pasigueños of all ages, also saw many eager participants.

Out-of-school youth were also allowed and encouraged to join the activities.

The athletes were able to avail of 10 free training sessions for the sports event in the duration of the workshop, which began on July 18.

Each sports event conducted their culminating activities separately in August, awarding the winners of the games and recognizing all the players who took part in the month-long workshop.

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and other city officials attended some of the culminating events. He oversaw some of the sessions, met with the athletes and coaches, and conferred medals, certificates, and loot bags to the participants.

The summer clinic is one of the city government's programs seeking to build, develop, and strengthen an inclusive grassroots sports program that nurtures athletes to compete in local, national, and international competitions.

Pasig City's sports delegations and athletes, many of whom belong to the local grassroots team, have been recognized in games such as the Palarong Panrehiyon 2023, where the Pasig team won first runner-up or the second overall championship title.

The Pasig team also won second place in the 2022 'Batang Pinoy' Games, and five persons with disability (PWD) athletes also earned medals in the recent Special Olympics World Games 2023.
