Pasig athletes lauded for 1st runner-up win in 'Palarong Panrehiyon' 2023

The sports delegation of Pasig City was lauded by the local government on Monday, May 8, for winning the second overall championship title in the “Palarong Panrehiyon” or the Regional Athletic Meet 2023 held last April 24 to 28. According to the city’s Public Information Office (PIO), the Pasig team ranked first runner-up in the overall results for both the elementary and secondary levels of the games. They took home 78 medals (26 gold, 22 silver, 30 bronze) for the elementary level, 96 (41 gold, 21 silver, 34 bronze) for the secondary level, plus 14 for the Paragames category. They earned the most medals for gymnastics with 19 gold, 16 silver, and 15 bronze; arnis with 16 gold, four silver, and seven bronze; swimming with five gold, four silver, and seven bronze; archery with seven gold, four silver; and taekwondo with one gold, three silver, and seven bronze. The athletes proudly earned awards for the city in other sports such as athletics (four gold, one silver, four bronze), badminton (two silver, eight bronze), baseball (one silver), boxing (one bronze), dance sport (five bronze), futsal (one gold), pencak silat (two bronze), sepak takraw (three gold), softball (two silver), table tennis (one gold, two silver, three bronze), volleyball (one bronze), and wrestling (five gold, two bronze). Two athletes in arnis and archery from the secondary level were highlighted as part of the “Most Bemedalled Athletes” of the games. Twenty-two others also won special awards for their exemplary performances in their respective sports. The Pasig teams for futsal and sepak takraw will represent the National Capital Region (NCR) during the Pre-National Competition in Laguna this coming June. Many of the other athletes will also be competing again in the Palarong Pambansa or National Games. Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto said that the city’s team was only one gold medal away from becoming the overall champion for the elementary level of the regional games, but they are happy nonetheless with the results and the achievements of the young athletes. He cited that there are still many rooms for improvement in the sports program which they aim to fulfill in order to further harness the skills and talents of the youth. “Ang habol naman natin dito hindi medalya. Ang habol natin dito ay magkaroon ng magandang karanasan ang ating mga atleta, ma-develop ang inyong character, disiplina, excellence, teamwork (We are aiming, not for medals, but for our athletes to have and learn from good life experiences, develop their character, discipline, excellence, and teamwork,” Sotto said. The regional games gathered student athletes representing schools from across the cities and municipality in the National Capital Region (NCR) to compete with each other in a variety of games and activities. Among the schools who deployed their athletes for the regional games were Rizal High School, Pinagbuhatan Elementary School (ES), Rosario ES, Pineda ES, Bagong Ilog ES, Dr. Sixto Antonio ES, Santolan ES, Pasig ES, Sagad ES, Caniogan ES, Sto. Niño ES, the Pasig Catholic College, St. Gabriel International School – Maybunga Annex, Dee Hwa Liong Academy, Academia de Sta. Martha, St. Paul College, and many others. The Palarong Panrehiyon formally opened last April 22 at the Marikina Sports Center in Marikina City. The games were officially closed in a ceremony held at the San Francisco High School in Quezon City on Wednesday, May 3. The games were conducted in preparation for the Palarong Pambansa (National Games) that will commence in July to August. It will also be hosted by the city government of Marikina.
