The Manila Police District (MPD) held on Monday morning, Aug. 28, a kick-off ceremony for the implementation of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Checkpoint at the Kartilya ng Katipunan, Ermita.

The Comelec Checkpoint will be installed in every town and city in the country until the holding of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on Oct. 30.

In conjunction with National Heroes Day, MPD Chief Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon, along with members of Comelec, led the inspection in the city.

The MPD chief said they will exercise a “plain view doctrine” at the checkpoints where policemen are allowed to point flashlights into the vehicles and check their passengers.

Dizon also reminded the public that Aug. 28 is the official start of the nationwide gun ban enforcement.

He noted that over 4,000 police officers will be assigned at the election checkpoints in the city.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin M. Garcia, members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Coast Guard of the Philippines were also present during the event.

The ceremonial activity was followed by an ocular inspection at SM Manila, which is the venue assigned for the filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) of Districts 1, 2, and 4 registrants.

Some 1,000 personnel of the Manila police also participated in the BSKE send-off ceremony held last Saturday, Aug. 26 at the MPD headquarters.
