A total of 148 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and seven personnel of the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) had their bivalent Covid-19 booster vaccinations, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.
In a statement issued on Friday, Aug. 18, BuCor said the vaccinations were administered by doctors and medical personnel of the Department of Health (DOH) Region VIII which sponsored the event.
It said that on instructions by Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr., the bureau has been partnering with other agencies, specifically the DOH, to provide adequate services to guarantee the PDLs’ “health and safety which are their rights as human beings.”
Last May, 105 PDLs at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP)in Muntinlupa City had been found infected with Covid-19.
CT/SSupt. Ma. Cecilia V. Villanueva, BuCor officer-in-charge director general for reformation and director of the bureau’s Directorate for Health Services, had said that the Covid-19 infections were most likely caused by visitors of PDLs.
The infections prompted BuCor to temporarily suspend the visitation privileges of PDLs at the NBP and the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City. The suspension had been lifted.
