'Distressed' teachers urge Marcos-Duterte to immediately act on calls for pay hike
A group of education workers on Tuesday, Aug. 15, reiterated their calls for a salary increase, noting that the “concrete” conditions of teachers are enough grounds for an urgent pay hike.

“Why is it taking too long for them to provide salary increase for teachers when it is clear that we are overworked yet underpaid?” Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines Chairperson Vladimer Quetua asked.
ACT issued the statement as a response to the plans of the current administration for the salary increase of teachers and education support personnel.
“The salary increase is an urgent matter,” Quetua said. “What we need is a concrete plan and not empty promises,” he added.
The group noted that seven senate bills are pending seeking to adjust teachers’ entry-level compensation in basic education that could be assessed and passed immediately.
ACT reiterated that teachers are already raising their calls for a P50,000 salary increase for teachers’ entry-level pay and P33,000 for Salary Grade 1.
“These calls are assessed directly from the actual living conditions of teachers and education support personnel,” ACT said.
During the first day of the 2023 Brigada Eskwela held at Victorino Mapa High School in San Miguel, Manila on Aug. 14, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte said the government is currently waiting for the results of the study focusing on “long-term outlook” for a salary increase of teaching, non-teaching personnel/

Quetua, on the other hand, pointed out that the masses, themselves, are the ones who articulate their needs and demands for a livable wage.
“The masses have already been raising this from legislative measures up to the streets,” Quetua said.

“Ang pagsasaliksik na sinasabi nila ay nasa harap na nila mismo (The study they are referring to is right in front of them),” Quetua said. “They just have to listen from our plea,” he added.
ACT also noted that the study would be “useless” if the government would not consult the teachers.
