BuCor vows to intensify security of PDLs in all prison facilities

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Monday, July 24, vowed to intensify the security of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in its prison facilities nationwide. “The Bureau of Corrections of the Department of Justice is responsible for safekeeping and rehabilitating Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), who have been sentenced to prison terms of more than three (3) years, by offering reformation programs, a suitable environment and secure setting,” BuCor said in a statement. “In our commitment to adhere to the twin mandates of the institution, we strengthen further our security of PDLs under our custody by operating a 24/7 duty in and outside prison camps bureau-wide including regular conduct of greyhound and searching operations to intensify the campaign against proliferation of contrabands; it also aims to provide genuine behavioral change capacitating PDL as law abiding citizens and productive members of society,” it assured. BuCor has seven prison and penal farms nationwide.  They are the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City; the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City; Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) in Abuyog, Leyte; San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City; Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro; Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan; and Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) in Davao del Norte. It said the when BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. was appointed as head of the agency on Oct. 24, 2022 in an acting capacity, he made it his mission to “restore ethics, fairmindedness, orderliness, righteousness, and morale towards a God-centered and compassionate corrections service.” It noted that since Catapang had been named BuCor head, he already had “an impressive accomplishment such as the Reorganization wherein the seconded personnel from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) were returned to their mother unit; the continuous implementation of the massive recruitment in line with the week-long celebration of the 117th Founding Anniversary of BuCor.” It said that BuCor had launched the use of K9 Dogs to aid during searching operations inside security camps. It added that Catapang also helped acquire “modern technology equipment to strengthen the implementation of security measures in the NBP and to all OPPFs” including walkthrough body scanners, portable metal detector, x-ray machine, facial recognition closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, monitor detector, laser detectors, cell phone locator, and aerial drones.
