Here's how to get into mindful snacking and learn the many benefits of thoughtful eating
By MB Lifestyle
With how fast-paced our lives are, eating can become a chore. It’s something that needs to be done—just to fill our stomachs and pacify hunger pains. Picking up anything that’s in close range, most of us end up multi-tasking as we eat while we work, eat while we check our phones, eat while we finish other tasks.
What more when we consume our snacks? Who doesn’t love to munch on food while we go about finishing errands and day-to-day responsibilities? But this should be done thoughtfully, and not absent-mindedly, which leads to overconsumption and possible weight gain.
In a Mondelēz International Global State of Snacking report published last 2022, it was revealed that consumers are mindfully snacking more. This means that they choose to be present while enjoying their snacks with 78 percent taking the time to snack. Many have also turned to portion sizes, admitting that they take their time to portion their snacks. This means that people have been prioritizing mindful snacking, which is eating with intention and enjoying that moment of munching on your chosen snacks.
“Our purpose, as a company, is to empower people to snack right. Consumers decide what and how they want to eat. Meanwhile, we obsess over their interests and constantly innovate to make sure they continue to reach for the goodness of our snacks when they want a delicious, wholesome, nutritious, or indulgent bite, made with ingredients and packaging they can feel good about. We’re on a mission to lead the future of snacking by offering the right snack, for the right moment, made the right way,” shares Chain Yin Lim, nutrition strategy and communications specialist of Mondelēz International in South East Asia.
The Mondelēz International team believes that mindful snacking can help build positive relationships with food, gain more satisfaction from eating, and help consumers eat in moderation. In an interview with Chain, she shares how important it is to get into mindful snacking.
“Focusing on the present moment can help you discover a more satisfying and positive snacking experience, savoring it with all the senses,” she continues. “Better management of food portions will make one eat less, paying attention to hunger cues and feelings of fullness.”
She also adds tips on how to start getting into mindful snacking:
1\. Know what you want\. Think about why you need a snack: A pause in the day? An energy or hunger boost? Then\, decide what you’re in the mood for\. Something sweet or savory? Crunchy or smooth?
2\. Be aware of the portions\. Decide how much to eat\. Pre\-portion out snacks before eating them\. 3\. Minimize distractions\. Put away the mobile phones and other electrical devices while eating\, and engage all your senses to savor your snack\. Focus on the smells\, tastes\, textures\, shapes\, and colors of your food\.
4\. Notice the texture\. Pay attention to the mouth feel and notice the texture in each bite\.
5\. Chew thoroughly\, because chewing helps to break down the foods and aids in digestion\.
6\. Finish one bite before taking another bite\. This helps you enjoy as you munch on your food\.
7\. Check your hunger level\. If you start to feel full\, just pause and take a sip of water before continuing the next bite\.
Having a positive relationship with food can definitely help consumers eat and enjoy their food better. This is Mondelēz International’s advocacy in helping people eat better and live healthier lives.
