How parents can nurture responsible digital citizens through tech and AI

Published Jul 13, 2023 07:51 am
In today's digitally connected world, parents are confronted with the significant task of guiding their children to become responsible digital citizens. As children immerse themselves in the digital world, it becomes imperative for parents to leverage technology and artificial intelligence (AI)  to ensure their child's online safety and wellbeing. PLDT Home has always been devoted to keeping children safe online and at the same time giving them access to information that helps in their education, wellbeing and growth.  Broadband services provider, PLDT Home explores how tech and AI when used thoughtfully can assist parents in safeguarding their children's digital experiences.

1\. Learn about internet safety through generative AI

Learning should be fun!  Teach kids about internet safety by making use of Google's conversational generative AI chatbot, Bard.  Bard can give you a list of ideas and activities that you can do with your kids.  Simply ask Bard, "What's a fun way to teach internet safety to kids?".  Surely, Bard will never run out of ideas that'll make learning more entertaining.

2\. Monitor and limit through content filtering and safe browsing

AI-driven content filtering systems and safe browsing tools can automatically detect and block inappropriate or harmful content.
* Tools by Google:  Parents can monitor their children's screen time, set limits and shut off their devices at bedtime. * Family Link by Google:  Parents can track and control their kids' online activity from their own phone.  This includes text messages and social media. * Tiktok's Digital Wellbeing features:  Parents can remotely manage their kid's TikTok activities. * Circle Home Plus:  A device and subscription service that lets you pause access to the internet, set time limits, filter contents to all devices on your home network.

3\. Teach kids empathy through situations IRL

PLDT Home and Google’s Be Internet Awesome video series features Sam and his AI friend Robo-berto in fun and enlightening adventures that illustrate how kids can be smart, alert, strong, kind, and brave online.  Their adventures impart valuable lessons on digital responsibility.

4\. Help raise critical thinkers

AI can play a valuable role in training children to be critical thinkers.  AI can assist kids in developing skills to evaluate the accuracy of information.  By teaching children how to fact-check and verify information using AI tools, they can learn, evaluate, detect and block inappropriate or harmful sites and social media platforms.

5.  Keep track of children's whereabouts

AI-powered GPS (Global Positioning System) technology can be used to help parents keep track of their children's location.  GPS-enabled devices such as smartphones or smartwatches use AI algorithms.  It can determine the exact location of the child in real-time. AI can also establish virtual boundaries called geofences that parents can set up around areas like home or school.  If the child crosses the predetermined boundaries, AI can trigger alerts notifying their parents.

6\. Make homes more secure

Surveillance and security systems equipped with AI-powered cameras use algorithms to detect unusual behaviour and potential dangers.  These devices can also send alerts so parents can monitor their homes from their smartphones.

7\. Monitor family's health

Wearable devices and smartphones equipped with AI algorithms can track vital signs, sleep patterns and activity levels.  These can alert parents of potential health issues in their children.  In addition, parents can simplify the family's daily schedule through AI-powered scheduling apps. While it is true that AI can play a pivotal role in helping parents raise responsible digital citizens. It is important, however, to strike a balance, combining technological tools with open communication, education and trust.
