500 Bilibid inmates set for transfer to Iwahig Prison in Palawan
About 500 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City will be transferred in May to the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan.
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said the transfer of the PDLs is part of efforts to close down the NBP and convert it into a government center.
Aside from the transfer of PDLs to other prison and penal farms, Catapang said that BuCor will expedite the release of qualified PDLS from NBP and other prison facilities.
BuCor is set to release on Thursday, April 20, a total of 532 PDLs with 211 of them from NBP.
Also to be freed are 20 PDLs from the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) in Abuyog, Leyte; 67 from the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City; 16 from the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro; 24 from the IPPF; 154 from the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) in Davao del Norte; and 40 from the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City.
Catapang said the BuCor has plans to put up a cooperative composed of released inmates.
“’Yung mga bagong laya na PDLs at ‘yung mga lupa pa na libre, bakante, sila na rin ang pwedeng magtuloy (The recently released PDLs will be allowed to cultivate idle lands of BuCor),” he said.
