Zamboanga City commends BuCor's San Ramon Prison in thwarting 'planned ASG attack'

The San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City has received commendation from the city’s local government for enhanced security measures that prevented the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) from the planned attacks to extricate its comrades from the jail facility. In a statement, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said that Zamboanga City Councilor Charlie M. Mariano, chairperson of the city’s Peace and Order Committee, visited SRPPF and awarded the “Plaque of Commendation from the City Government of Zamboanga to this penal farm.” Intelligence reports showed that the ASG planned to launch bombings in Zamboanga City to divert attention while another group would rescue their comrades who are detained at the SRPPF. BuCor said the Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested a suspected ASG member Omar Mabanza, 27, and seized from him an improvised explosive device (IED) and other bomb-making components during an operation in Zamboanga City last Feb. 17. Last February 15, four detained ASG members were transferred from SRPPF to the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City. “A signed resolution commending C/SInsp. Julius E. Pereja, assistant regional superintendent for Security and Operation of SRPPF, for his exemplary performance of duty and effective leadership displayed during the planned attack of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) to rescue Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) including their comrades who were being held in the SRPPF,” BuCor said. “A selfless act of courage which precluded the staging of bombing activities in Zamboanga City and thus worthy of the City’s deepest appreciation and highest commendation,” it said quoting from the commendation. It said that Zamboanga City also awarded commendations to three other SRPPF personnel for “strengthening the security measures of SRPPF. Those awarded were CO3 Alvin M Albarracin, chief of the Intelligence and Investigation Section; CO3 Sylverio M Garcia, deputy chief of the Intelligence and Investigation Section; and CO1 Jonathan Paingan, member of the Security and Patrol Unit. SRPPF Superintendent C/Supt. Vic Domingo F. Suyat congratulated his personnel “for the bravery and courage exhibited throughout the incident.” “The Bureau, under the headship of Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr., through the effort and leadership of SRPPF Superintendent Suyat continues to cooperate with other law enforcement agencies to serve and protect the community,” BuCor also said.
