The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is ready to conduct a wider probe of the alleged hacking of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) servers, Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra said on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 11.
“We’ll let the Comelec finish its own internal probe. If a wider investigation is found necessary and NBI assistance would be useful, we’d gladly oblige,” Guevarra stressed.
The Technews team of the Manila Bulletin discovered that a group of hackers was able to reportedly breach Comelec servers, allegedly downloading more than 60 gigabytes of data.
Among those reportedly downloaded were usernames and PINS of vote-counting machines (VCM).
MB’s Technews team immediately informed Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez of its findings.
