Palace declares May 9 a special holiday for the 2022 elections

Malacañang has declared Monday, May 9, 2022, a special non-working holiday throughout the country to allow Filipinos to exercise their right to vote but urged voters to follow health protocols.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea signed Proclamation No. 1357 on Thursday, May 5.

In the proclamation, President Duterte cited the need to declare May 9, 2022, a special holiday to "enable the people to properly exercise their right to vote, subject to the public health measures of the national government."

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had said that every voter would be allowed to vote, even those with Covid-19 or those exhibiting symptoms of the virus.

Comelec Commissioner George Garcia said that 65.8 million Filipinos are expected to vote on Monday.

Last week, President Duterte called on the public to adhere to the minimum public health standards when they flock to the precincts to vote to avert the surge of Covid-19 cases projected by health experts.

He particularly asked the public to keep in mind mask-wearing, handwashing, and physical distancing protocols.

"So better, again, remember when you go to the electoral precincts, kindly tell yourself that you have to remember the things that government wants you to follow. So that hindi masyado tayo mahirapan (we won't have too much trouble) and we will prevent another surge," he said.

"We can only interdict the surge in the future by the simple washing of the hands, ang mask importante talaga ‘yan (and masks are important)," he added.

On Tuesday, May 3, the President said voters qualified for a booster shot must get the jab to protect themselves from possible coronavirus infections in polling places where there will be crowding.

While the booster shots might not 100-percent guarantee that there will be no Covid-19 reinfection, Duterte pointed out that these jabs could help protect the people from the coronavirus and its effects.

"It can protect you, and you can vote there without any --- sans the worry about getting the infection again," Duterte said.
