6 Tau Gamma Phi frat members charged for 'hazing to death' John Matthew Salilig

Criminal complaints were filed with the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday, March 2, against six members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity for the death of John Matthew Salilig, a chemical engineering student of the Adamson University (AdU) in Manila. The complaints were for violation of Republic Act No. 8049, the Anti-Hazing Act of 1995, as amended by RA 11053, the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018. The Philippine National Police (PNP) assisted John Michael Salilig, brother of John Matthew, in filing the complaints. Those charged were named in the complaints as tattoo artist Michael Lambert Ritalde, 31; Mark Edrosa, 39; and students Romeo Earl Anthony, 21; Tung Cheng Teng Jr., 22; Jerome Balot, 22; and Sandro Victorino, 28.  They were arrested on March 2. John Matthew’s fellow fraternity neophyte, AdU student Roi Osmon Tuazon Dela Cruz, was also assisted by the PNP in filing another complaint against the six fraternity member for violations of the hazing law. When presented for inquest before the DOJ, Police Lt. Col. Virgilio Jopia, police chief of Imus, Cavite, said the six arrested suspects opted for the conduct of preliminary investigation. “Sinampa natin yung kaso at syempre inexercise nila ‘yung rights nila for preliminary investigation (We filed the case but they exercised their right for the conduct of a preliminary investigation),” Jopia said. “Sa March 10 yung kanilang submission ng kanilang counter-affidavit for the preliminary investigation (They will submit their counter-affidavits for the preliminary investigation this March 10),” he said. In the meantime, Jopia said all six suspects will remain in police custody. Salilig’s remains were found in a vacant lot in Imus, Cavite last Feb. 28 since he was reported missing last Feb. 18. The complaints stated that Dela Cruz was with Salilig when they underwent hazing as neophytes of the fraternity.
