The city of Marawi in Lanao Del Sur will have two new barangays as a result of the plebiscite held last Saturday, March 18, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said.
Majority of the voters in two barangays in Marawi City participated in the plebiscite and voted yes to form two new barangays: Datu Dalidigan and Boganga II, the poll body said in a statement on Sunday night, March 19.
“In Brgy. Sagonsongan, 476 out of its 480 registered voters trooped to Bitio Elementary School to produce a 99.17 percent turnout. Out of this number, 99.37 percent or 473 voted YES to ratify the creation of Brgy. Datu Dalidigan, while 00.63 percent or only three voted NO,” the Comelec stated.
“On the other hand, in Brgy. Boganga, 950 out of its 992 registered voters went to Kilala Elementary School to yield a 95.76 percent turnout, 99.79 percent or 948 voting YES to ratify the creation of Brgy Boganga II and just 00.21 percent two voters voting NO,” it added.
The Comelec said that at 6:30 p.m. of Saturday (Plebiscite Day), the City Plebiscite Board of Canvassers of Marawi City “was able to canvas all the votes and proclaim YES as the winning vote.”
“The overwhelmingly high voter turnout represents a decisive victory for the survivors of the Marawi Siege, most of whom were internally displaced persons, who will be residents and constituents of Barangays Boganga II and Datu Dalidigan from this day forward,” the poll body said.
“The newly formed local government units are mandated to assure their general welfare, chart their future, and forge their continuing recovery from the devastating violence they face in 2017,” it added.
