'Middleman' in Percy Lapid killing dies in National Bilibid Prison – DOJ

A National Bilibid Prison's (NBP) inmate who allegedly served as middleman in contacting the killers of broadcaster Percival Mabasa, better known as Percy Lapid, died last Oct. 18 while in detention, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 20.
“Sa prison hospital doon namatay o kaya doon siya dinala where he was pronounced dead (He died at the prison hospital or was pronounced dead there),” Remulla said citing reports he received.
He could not elaborate or give added details on the death of the inmate (person deprived of liberty) as he admitted that the information he received lacked details.
“Basta yan lang report sa akin (That’s what was only given to me),” he said.
He said the inmate was 42 years old. “He is a person deprived of liberty which means he has been sentenced already,” he said.
But Remulla said “I have no idea of his criminal record.”
He said he has directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the death and conduct an autopsy of the remains.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila if you can bring an independent witness like Dr. Raquel Fortun to look at the autopsy itself so much the better,” he said.
“So, we will open it to other medico legal experts to find out,” he assured.
Self-confessed killer of Percy Lapid, Joel S. Escorial, had said that the instruction to kill the broadcaster came from somebody “inside the NBP.”
