Palace appeals to respect election results; urges Comelec to dispel doubts about polls' integrity

Malacañang is leaving it to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to answer allegations about the integrity of the recently concluded national and local polls as it appealed to the public to respect the result of the elections.

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said this after the Philippine Election 2022 International Observer Mission said that "the May 9 election did not meet the standard of free and fair."

In a statement, Andanar said that the Comelec should do something to address the lingering doubts about the elections.

"To dispel doubts of some quarters... we leave the matter to the Commission on Elections," he said Thursday, May 19.

The acting Palace spokesman echoed President Duterte's observation that there were no voting irregularities during the elections.

Meanwhile, Andanar urged the public to respect the result of the elections.

"Let us respect the outcome of the election and give chance to the winning candidates to fulfill their campaign platform," he said.

Last week, President Duterte lauded the swift completion of the 2022 elections but urged the Comelec to investigate the hiccups in the use of the Comelec's vote-counting machines (VCMs), causing doubts about cheating or election fraud.

Duterte, however, refused to believe that there was indeed cheating in the elections.

"Wala akong nakita sa totoo lang at hindi talaga ako papayag (I didn't see any of the sort and to tell you the truth, I would not have allowed it)," he said.
