DepEd highlights importance of reading in nation-building, developing desire for learning
The Department of Education (DepEd) underscored the importance of instilling the value of reading especially among learners.

Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching Gina Gonong, during the 4th National Competition on Storybook Writing, highlighted the importance of reading in nation-building.
She also explained how the power of stories can inspire citizens --- especially learners --- to develop a desire for learning.
DepEd, through the Bureau of Learning Resources (BLR), conducted the Storybook Recognition Rites and Reading Exhibit for the 4th National Competition on Storybook Writing in Tanza, Cavite on Feb. 18.
The Storybook Recognition Rites is the culmination of the 4th National Competition on Storybook Writing, which recognizes the best writers, illustrators, and creators of children's stories nationwide.
During the Reading Exhibit, entries from different regions for the said competition were featured.
“Seeing all those stories today in the mother tongue, Filipino, and English, we have so much talent in the Philippines,” Gonong said.
“So, we should do something to make sure that these talents prosper some more and you get to inspire other teachers and supervisors to write more. Because when you write more, you inspire readers,” she added.
Aside from the storybook entries, exhibit booths also showcased the best programs, projects, processes, and practices from the Learning Resource Management Sections of the regions and divisions of DepEd and ABC+.
Moreover, Book-based Interactive Storytelling and Open Mic Storytelling Sessions were also conducted during the program.
Aside from Gonong, other DepEd officials were also present at the event including Assistant Secretary for Curriculum and Teaching – Curriculum Development, Learning Resources, and Learning Delivery Alma Ruby Torio; BLR Directors Ariz Delson Acay Cawilan, Edward Jimenez, and Raul La Rosa; and Bureau of Learning Delivery Director Leila Areola.
