EU envoy sends sympathies to Lanao del Sur governor after ambush


European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Veron on Saturday, Feb. 18, sent his sympathies and well wishes to Lanao del Sur Gov. Mamintal “Bombit” Adiong Jr. after his convoy was ambushed.

The envoy sent his message via Twitter and even tagged the Bangsamoro government’s official Twitter account, as well as that of Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Adiong, the governor’s brother.

“Speedy recovery to @lgu_lanaodelsur Gov. Bombit Alonto Adiong and my deepest condolences to the families of his staff who were killed in yesterday‘s attack,” Veron wrote.

“My thoughts are with him and the victims,” he added.

Adiong and one of his aides—Ali Macapado Tabao—were hurt and four of their companions were killed during an ambush along the boundary of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon on Friday, Feb. 17.

The four killed were identified as Juraij Adiong, Aga Sumandar, Jalil Cosain, and a driver identified only as Kobi.

Adiong and Tabao sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the nearest hospital. Another report said the governor suffered a hip wound.

The governor’s brother, Rep. Adiong, said in a statement that “the worst has passed . . . He’s out of danger.”

He called on authorities “to act with urgency and utilize all legal means available to pursue and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
