Funeral ceremony for Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun to be held today


The funeral ceremony for Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, who starred in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite” and the hit drama “Coffee Prince,” will be held today, Dec. 29.  

According to the Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) funeral website, Lee Sun-kyun’s funeral ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. KST (10:30 a.m. Philippine time).

He was found dead in his car on Dec. 27 amid investigation by the police on his alleged illegal drug use. He was 48. 

Lee Sun-kyun's (이선균) bereaved family and colleagues will strictly observe the funeral ceremony at the SNUH funeral hall. 

Afterwards he will be cremated at the Suwon City cremation center and his remains will be enshrined at the Samsung Elysium in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province in South Korea.

Stars honored and paid tribute to Lee Sun-kyun.  

His friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry visited the funeral hall to pay their last respects. 

Among them were “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae, Jo Jung-suk, Ha Jung-woo, Sol Kyung-gu, Lee Sung-min, Jeon Do-yeon, Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Nam-gil, Im Si-wan, Moon Sung-geun, Yoo Yeon-seok, Kim Sang-ho, Kim Seong-cheol, Jang Seong-gyu and Bae Seong-woo.  

Also visiting were Kim Hee-sun, director Bong Joon-ho, Jeong Ryeo-won, Oh Na-ra, Kim Ji-hyun, Lee Moo-saeng, Choi Won-young, Ha Do-kwon, Song Seon-mi, Lee Ki-woo, Jeon Jin-oh, Lee Jung-ok, Park Soo-young, Kang Shin-il, singer Gil and Shin Dong-yup.

Lee Sun-kyun debuted as an actor in 1999. His film and drama projects also include “Pasta,” “Golden Time,” “Sleep,” “Killing Romance,” “Payback,” “Diary of a Prosecutor,” “My Mister” and “Miss Korea.” 

Lee Sun-kyun was found dead in his car parked near Waryong Park in Jongno, Seoul on Dec. 27. 

He died in an apparent suicide with charcoal briquette found in the front passenger seat, Korean news outlet Yonhap News reported.  Burning charcoal briquette in an enclosed space can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and death. 

Before his death, Lee Sun-kyun was being investigated by Korean police since October for illegal drug use. 

Last Dec. 23, he underwent 19 hours of questioning by the police, which lasted until the morning of Dec. 24. 

He was suspected of using marijuana and psychotropic drugs at the home of a hostess of an entertainment bar in Gangnam. He had been under a lot of pressure since the police investigation started in October.  He tested negative for illegal drugs through a simple test and thorough test by Korea’s National Forensic Service.
