Celebrating the rich Pinoy heritage through fashion

A gathering of Filipino creatives, highlighting the terno

Paskong TernoCon 2023 just took place last Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, and it was refreshing to see how the next generation of tastemakers are wearing our very own Filipiniana pieces.

It’s a vision shared by SM Supermalls, Bench/Lifestyle + Clothing, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), along with designers Joey Samson and Lesley Mobo who showcased their collections at the show.

“This is the third edition for Ternocon 3, and we are blessed to be continuously given the platform to try to educate that the Barong Filipino or terno is not a Filipino costume. We can make wonders with it for a lot of people to be able to identify with it,” Joey tells Manila Bulletin.

“I love playing with the idea of taking inspiration from our own culture and tradition. It’s always a challenge to make it young,” Lesley continues. “What’s exciting is how we can make it appealing. The younger Filipinos would wear it everyday, even having lunch, the more we see it, the more that we know we love our country, we love who we are as Filipinos. And the way to start it is to wear our own National dress.”
