Bilibid hospital eyed as 'world-class facility'

The hospital of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City will soon be a world-class facility to handle the needs of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and incumbent or retired officials and personnel of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said on Wednesday, Nov. 8, the NBP hospital is undergoing renovation and upgrading.

“Gusto ko maging world class ‘yang hospital na ‘yan (I want this to become a world class hospital),”Catapang said during the awarding ceremonies for loyal uniformed and non-uniformed personnel of BuCor.

“Para sa inyo ‘yan (This is for you),” he said as he pointed out that "pag magkasakit kayo pwede kayo d’yan (When you get sick you can use the facility)."

He reminded BuCor personnel that all PDLs at NBP will be transferred to other prison facilities by 2028 and only BuCor training facilities and offices will remain in Bilibid.

Last Monday, Nov. 6, more than 500 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the Bilibid and the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City were transferred to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF).

Catapang said the transfer is part of BuCor’s 10-year development plan to establish prisons in every region of the country.

BuCor has started celebrating early its 118th founding anniversary on Nov. 27.
