502 BuCor personnel finish training; graduate as corrections officers

A total of 502 personnel of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) underwent a six-month training and graduated on Monday, Nov. 6, with the rank of corrections officer 1 (CO1).

During the graduation ceremony held at BuCor's headquarters in Muntinlupa City, BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. urged the new graduates to help him improve the image of the agency.

“Kailangan maibalik natin ang respeto sa atin sa BuCor (We need to bring back respect to the BuCor),” Catapang said.

The graduation ceremony started the week-long celebration of the 118th founding anniversary of BuCor.

Also, BuCor said it has hired 528 new CO1 personnel who will take their oaths of office on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

In his message to the new graduates, Catapang also urged them to make BuCor "relevant, sustainable, and respected.”

“‘Yan ang magiging battle cry natin dahil sumusunod tayo sa misyon ng ating mahal na Kalihim Boying Remulla na pagbutihin ang serbisyo sa taong bayan at malayo tayo sa masasamang isyu o hindi magandang isyu nangyayari sa BuCor (That will be our battle cry in pursuit of the mission set by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla to improve services for the people and to turn away from bad issues at the BuCor),” Catapang said.

For his part, Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Deo L. Marco told the graduates: “Kailangan namin ng tulong ninyo (We need your help)."

“Sana po ang ginagawa namin dito sa DOJ at mga pamunuan ng BuCor ay maging inspirasyon sa inyo (We hope that what the DOJ and BuCor have been doing becomes an inspiration),” Marco said. 

“‘Wag po tayo tumulad sa iba na nagpapainfluence sa masasamang bagay kagaya ng kurapsyon, droga, violence dito sa loob (Do not be like those who are influenced in corruption, drugs, and violence),” he advised.

"Nandyan po ang napakaraming programa nakapila sa Bureau of Corrections (we have many programs lined up for the BuCor).”

He said the programs include the regionalization of prisons, the digitization of prison records, and other reformation program proposals brought before the House of Representatives.
