DOJ vows swift probe, prosecution in killing of radio broadcaster Juan Jumalon

The Department of Justice (DOJ) vowed a thorough investigation and prosecution to the full extent of the law of the killers of radio broadcaster Juan Jumalon, also known as "DJ Johnny Walker."

Reports stated that Jumalon was broadcasting live over his home-based radio station 94.7 Calamba Gold FM  in barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri in Calamba, Misamis Occidental at around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, when a lone gunman entered and shot him in the face. He was taken to a hospital in Calamba town but was declared dead on arrival.

President Marcos has vowed to bring justice to Jumalon's killing as he ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to investigate the crime and apprehend the perpetrators.

“We vow to spare no effort in ensuring a thorough investigation, the swift apprehension of the perpetrators, and their subsequent prosecution to the fullest extent of the law,” the DOJ said through Assistant Secretary and SpokespersonJose Dominic F. Clavano IV.

The DOJ said: “DJ Johnny Walker's untimely and tragic death is an immense loss, not only to his family and loved ones but also to the journalism community and the nation as a whole. His commitment to informing and engaging the public through his platform exemplified the crucial role that journalists play in our society."

Clavano conveyed the DOJ’s deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Jumalon as the department assured that it “stands united with them, demanding justice for his brutal murder.” 

“The Department of Justice reiterates its unwavering commitment to upholding press freedom and the safety of journalists. We recognize the indispensable role of a free and independent media in maintaining a healthy democracy. Any attempts to silence or intimidate journalists will be met with the full force of the law,” he said. 

He condemned strongly Jumalon's killing as it described it as "an affront to the principles of democracy, freedom of expression, and the sanctity of a free press.”

He then urged media organizations, civil society, and all stakeholders “to join hands in denouncing this act of violence and in fostering an atmosphere that supports free expression and responsible journalism.”

“The loss of DJ Johnny Walker only strengthens our resolve to create a society where journalists can report fearlessly and truthfully. The DOJ remains steadfast in its mission to strengthen media institutions, improve journalist safety, and protect press freedom,” he said. 

“Let DJ Johnny Walker's legacy serve as a reminder of the importance of a free press and the need to continue our collective efforts to ensure a safe and enabling environment for journalists to carry out their vital work,” he added.
