AUDIOJUNKIE: Collaborations and the circle of covers

H.E.R. (real name Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson) proves  she is as much as connected to rock as she is with R&B and Hiphop collaborating with the Foo Fighters.

The “Lost Souls” singer released her take on “The Glass” (taken from the Foos’ most recent “But Here We Are” album) more than a week ago.

But as early as last month, H.E.R. (pronounced as ‘her’) had performed the song with the Foos at SNL (Saturday Night Live).

H.E.R. was harmonizing with Dave Grohl on vocals (as well as on lead guitar with Chris Shiflett) in this mid-tempo power ballad.

H.E.R. adds the rock and roll hall of famer band to a growing list of high caliber music acts she has performed with that already include Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, Toni  Braxton and Saweetie to name a few.

Speaking of the Foo Fighters, Dave appeared on Norah Jones’ Playing Along podcast (over at YouTube) performing the former’s song “Razor” bare bones style with Dave on vocals, acoustic guitar and Norah on upright piano and singing along.

The resulting jam between the two was vibey with Norah's piano fills punctuating Dave’s ascending motifs on guitar.

Dave was seemingly surprised at the result.

He commented, "Wow, I haven’t done that one in 20 years.”

Norah said, "Isn’t it pretty?”

On Norah's channel, we saw a video of her  performing a piano cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” from six years ago.

Even her audience were pretty amazed at hearing Norah turn this 90’s rock classic into a subdued yet moody piano piece that’s neither jazz nor rock but still very temperamental.

Meanwhile, Post Malone has his own version of a Pearl Jam classic.

The singer appeared at the Howard Stern Show last year and when asked why he picked the cover, Post shared that the song reminded him of his older brother who was “a beautiful man, and he just introduced me to Pearl Jam in a big way.”

If you didn’t know Post Malone beyond “beerbongs & Bentleys,” you’d question his motive singing a Pearl Jam song. But we’ve seen Post being into rock and guitars a couple of times to know he’s into rock as much as Hiphop.

His “Better Man” is definitely missing that booming baritone, but Post’s shaky, reedy voice that eventually finds it stride into the first chorus was a heartfelt take. A brave cover if ever there was one.

Howard commented: “(producer) Andrew Watt on guitars and Post Malone singing Betterman…”

We recall the late, great singer-songwriter and Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell with his cover of “Nothing Compares To You.”

If you’re going to spend a few minutes of your life in YT, you should definitely spend 5 minutes of it watching Cornell own this early 90’s classic. And the fact that it was originally made a hit by the recently departed Sinead O’Connor and written by the late great Prince makes it more poignant and special.
