As he turns 60 years old, House Speaker Martin Romualdez says that he wants to "dedicate the rest of his life" serving the Filipino.
"I dedicate the rest of my life serving you better," said Romualdez, president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), when asked about his birthday wish.
"At 60 years old, I want to dedicate more of my time in serving [the Filipino] better," he declared.
The Speaker heads the 300-plus strong House of Representatives and is arguably President Marcos' top ally in the entire legislature.
Romualdez celebrated his birthday Tuesday, Nov. 14, although he was already inundated by well-wishers as early as Monday. Among these were some 200 House employees who joined the flag-raising ceremony, which the Speaker led.
Romualdez expressed his gratitude to the House workers in his speech after the flag-raising rites.
“Your hard work, dedication, and resilience are the driving forces behind our remarkable achievements. Let us continue to work hand in hand, with integrity and commitment, as we steer this House towards greater heights,” the Leyte 1st district congressman said.
Marcos also sent special greetings to the Speaker via personalized video message during Monday’s plenary session.

In the same speech, Romualdez kept the festive atmosphere alive by highlighting the "salary improvements" of House employees, as well as various planned infrastructure projects within Batasan Complex.
“In our ongoing efforts, we have successfully implemented salary improvements that honor your invaluable contributions to our legislative work. These adjustments are a testament to our recognition of your hard work and dedication. Furthermore, we have continuously worked on enriching your benefits package,” he said to much applause.
“The construction of a permanent secretariat building is underway, a testament to our commitment to providing a stable and conducive work environment for our staff. In the realm of technology, we are undergoing a network modernization project. This upgrade will not only enhance our digital infrastructure but also ensure that we stay connected and efficient in this rapidly evolving digital age,” he said.
The House is also establishing the Institute for Legislation and Legislative Governance, which the Speaker said would “serve as a beacon of knowledge and learning, enriching our understanding and skills in legislation and governance".
Also in progress is the construction of a permanent warehouse, which will store and manage House resources.
“We have also not forgotten the importance of health and wellness. A state-of-the-art sport and fitness center, including a basketball court, is in the works. This facility will provide a space for physical activity and relaxation, promoting a healthy work-life balance,” Romualdez said.
He said the House is also planning to build a medical and wellness center for its personnel and their dependents.
