READ: World's oldest dog, Bobi, passes away at 31
This breed has a life expectancy between 12 to 14 years
Our furry friends hold a special place in our hearts, as they provide us with the love and comfort we crave. We have a strong desire to stay close to them, and it seems they feel the same way. But, today we received the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear friend, Bobi, who held the record as the oldest dog in the world.
Public figure and doctor, Karen Becker, shared the heart-wrenching news of Bobi's departure on social media. Her words expressed the deep sadness that comes with the realization that there never seems to be enough time with our beloved pets. She wrote, "Is there ever enough time? I think not. Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings."
Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a livestock guardian dog and has a life expectancy of about 12 to 14 years. This is according to the American Kennel Club.
Even though Bobi's life span exceeded that of every dog in history, his 11,478 days on this earth were never enough for those who loved him. Leonel, his fur dad, revealed the secret to Bobi's exceptional longevity —good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to explore his surroundings, consistent veterinary care, and, most importantly, love. Bobi knew he was deeply loved, and his impact on the world was immeasurable. "Godspeed, Bobi... you've taught the world all that you were meant to teach," Karen Becker added with a heavy heart.
The Guinness World Records also expressed their sorrow over Bobi's passing. They acknowledged him as the world's oldest dog, living to be 31 years and 165 days old. Bobi spent his entire life with his loving owner, Leonel Costa, and his family in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros. The record was officially recognized on February 2, 2023, and Leonel shared that Bobi was born on May 11, 1992 and passed away on Oct. 20, 2023.
