Marcos made the promise as he hosted a hero's welcome on Wednesday, Oct. 25, for the Filipino athletes who participated in the Asian Games.

"We are dedicated to fully developing future athletes who will proudly represent our country," the President said.

"Government established the National Academy of Sports to promote the development of skills and talent of students through a secondary education program," he added.

Marcos was referring to the NAS that is currently under construction in Capaz, Tarlac, which, he said, must be fast tracked so that athletes can immediately pursue their training there.

He further vowed that the government "will do more" in order to gain better results in future international competitions, citing that the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is implementing a five-year Sports Development Plan that aims to address the long-standing concerns of Filipino athletes.

He added that the development of the New Clark City as a sports hub in the Philippines was already underway.

"We know and understand that for our athletes to succeed in these competitions, they all need the help they can get from their government," he said.

In order to fulfill the development plan, the President also ordered the PSC to work with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and other agencies to strengthen the country's medical scientific athletes services unit to help injured athletes recover quickly.

He also called on those who have resources and influence to continue supporting the athletes, saying "I hope that you can continue to support them generously."

'Unlock your full potential'

Marcos recognized the athletes as the country's modern-day heroes, saying their stint in the Asian Games added to the great influence sports has in developing the society.

With this, he challenged Filipino athletes to keep aspiring and working to be the best versions of themselves.

"Sa ating mga atleta, ang hamon ko sa inyo (For our athletes, my challenge to you): keep aspiring, keep believing, keep working. Spare no effort to unlock your full potential and be the best versions of yourselves. Know fully well that the government and the entire nation is with you every single step of the way," the Chief Executive said.

During the awarding ceremony dubbed "Gabi ng Parangal at Pasasalamat Para sa Bayaning Atletang Pilipino" held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, the Filipino athletes received a Presidential Citation and cash incentives from the Office of the President and PAGCOR.
