Many detained 'undesirable' foreigners resort to 'sue me' scheme to stop deportation -- BI
Twenty-five percent of about 300 foreigners detained at the Bureau of Immigration's (BI) facility in Taguig City have resorted to "demanda-me" (sue me) scheme to stop their deportation.
During PTV's Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public forum on Thursday, Oct. 12, BI Spokesperson Dana Mengote-Sandoval said that many foreigners facing deportation have resorted to get cases filed against themselves to prevent them from being kicked out of the country.
“Hindi po natin pwede iimplement ang deportation kung meron po silang pending na kaso dito sa Pilipinas. Of course kailangan nila pagbayaran ang mga kasalanan nila (We cannot implement deportation if the foreigners have pending cases in the Philippines. Of course they have to pay for their crimes they committed),” the spokesperson pointed out.
However, Sandoval lamented that “some foreign nationals na nahuli po natin (some of the foreign nationals we arrested) are abusing this by filing cases against themselves.”
She said that of about 300 foreign nationals detained at the BI’s detention facility in Taguig City, “almost half po ay merong pending cases here in the Philippines (half of them have pending cases in the Philippines)” and almost half of them "have filed cases against themselves."
Sandoval then expressed the BI's gratitutude to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for expediting the cases of foreigners facing deportation.
