Recognizing the urgent need to address environmental and climate issues, a Catholic official called on Catholics to “develop strong consciences” to care for the environment.

“I hope many people will have a conscience about what is happening in the world today and respond to it,” said Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera in a post by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Tuesday, Oct. 10. “The important thing is that there is a response to it,” he added.
Catholics, Garcera said, also need to “learn how to discern wisely when it comes to caring for the environment and promoting the common good.”
Meanwhile, Garcera underscored the importance for people to have the “gift of a disturbed mind.” This, he said, would enable them to “see clearly and make sound judgments.”
“Let us have the conscience and awareness of the situation, and let us continue telling people about what is happening to our environment,” Garcera added.
‘Bike for Kalikasan’
Garcera made the statement during the second “Caritas Bike for Kalikasan” held in Batangas province on Oct. 7.

Meanwhile, Caritas Philippines President Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo expressed hope that the event would “inspire people to make lifestyle changes that are more sustainable and to work together to create a more just and equitable world for all.” (Erika Mariel Custodio Escover)
